When I worked in the Bay Area as a hospitalist, I rotated between two hospitals…a tertiary academic Death Star and a community Outer Rim Hospital. The politics of transfers between the two facilities always fascinated me, and Doc Vader gives voice to the stereotypical frustrations experienced on the tertiary receiving facility’s side. He is, after all, #DarkSide4Lyfe.

Our community and rural hospitals are crucial care points for a huge part of our vulnerable population, and they experience serious challenges (made no easier by the snooty academic centers that love to hate on them). Often staffed by international medical grads like my Dad (from India) these hospitals do amazing work with the resources they have. But sometimes, patients need a “higher level of care.”

And sometimes poor communication is the path to the Dark Side.
